Editor’s Note: The Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com has been the leading golf event on the island since it was introduced in 2008. The tournament draws top young Professional Golf Association qualified competitors from all over the mainland U.S. This year, the fourth edition will be held March 7-13 at Trump International Golf Club in Río Grande.
The Puerto Rico Open is dedicated to Juan “Chi Chi” Rodríguez, the island’s most famous golfer, who has a lifetime 38 professional wins, including eight PGA Tour wins and 22 Senior PGA Tour wins. He was the first and only Puerto Rican inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame and was elected to the World Humanitarian Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Most recently, on Dec. 1, 2010, he was recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives for his support of Latino youth through the Chi Chi Rodríguez Youth Foundation and the U.S. Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. What follows are his comments about the Puerto Rico Open, an event that combines his two greatest passions: golf and Puerto Rico.
The Puerto Rico Open is a wonderful event that has brought a lot of attention to the island and to the great golf that can be played here. It could bring even more attention if it were broadcast live on a major network or cable channel, as are the Big 3 golf tournaments. The Golf Channel, wonderful as it is, doesn’t draw as many viewers. I would do anything in the world to help make the Puerto Rico Open better, and I definitely would try to get better dates for a better audience.
That said, the Puerto Rico Golf Association is doing an excellent job of promoting the sport and, especially, the arrangements for the Puerto Rico Open.
All the players I have spoken to say they love the event and love the island. They always mention the great hospitality and, for some reason, thank me! The young guys came here and won the tournament are all a credit to the game—like rookie Derek Lamely, who won the 2010 tournament in only his 12th PGA Tour start; Greg Kraft, who won the inaugural event; and Michael Bradley, who won in 2009. Proceeds from the tournament help many local charities, too, especially in the Río Grande area.
This year’s youngsters better watch out: I am getting ready to play the tournament—I practiced yesterday. I built a gym in my home and I am getting in shape for this one. I will play as well as I used to!
Seriously, I love the tournament, and the Trump course is the top tournament course on the island. I love to play there, especially with my good friend Jorge Díaz, one of the owners. Dorado is still at the top of my list, too. I like to play golf alone. That way I can make a 4 and write down a 3. I know one guy who made a hole in one and wrote down a zero. I love to putt the greens at El Legado more than anywhere else. They are like the ones on the PGA Tour on the U.S. mainland.
What’s really important in professional golf is the number of times you win. If you win 20 or more tournaments, then you are a real pro—Ben Hogan won 62 and Sam Sneed won 83. The money isn’t as important as the trophy, but it [the money] has become too important. There are now players who could be within a half-meter of winning, but come in second because they don’t try hard enough. It takes the competition out of it. In my day, we didn’t play for the money but for the trophy. Money has changed the game.
I love the fact that young golfers and their families come to Puerto Rico for the golf. We have many wonderful courses and the weather is almost always perfect. I still get a thrill out of traveling around the island to El Yunque and the caves in Camuy and I never get tired of Old San Juan. I like to go out to dinner to wonderful restaurants like Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, the Pearl at La Concha Hotel, and Sam’s Chophouse in Dorado. I like to go to the Ponce Hilton for lunch and explore the south coast of the island, especially the beaches to watch for manatees.
I am proud of my island and am glad to tell everyone. I’d happily make a commercial to promote Puerto Rico so more people all over the world learn about us.

El torneo atrae a los principales jugadores jóvenes calificados por la Asociación Profesional de Golf (PGA, por sus siglas en inglés) procedentes de los Estados Unidos continentales. Este año la cuarta edición del torneo se llevará a cabo del 7 al 13 de marzo en el Trump International Golf Club en Río Grande. El Puerto Rico Open estará dedicado a Juan “Chi Chi” Rodríguez, el golfista más famoso de nuestra isla y quien ha obtenido 38 victorias profesionales en su carrera, incluyendo ocho victorias en el PGA Tour y 22 victorias en el Senior PGA Tour. Él fue el primer y único puertorriqueño exaltado al Salón Mundial de la Fama del Golf (World Golf Hall of Fame) y en el 1994 fue incluido en el Salón Mundial de la Fama Humanitaria del Deporte (World Humanitarian Sports Hall of Fame). “El Puerto Rico Open es un magnífico evento que ha generado mucha atención para la Isla y al gran golf que se puede jugar aquí. Podría generar aún más atención si se transmitiera en directo por una de las grandes cadenas o uno de los principales canales de cable, como los torneos de golf del ‘Big 3’. El Golf Channel, excelente de por sí, no atrae a tantos televidentes. Haría cualquier cosa por ayudar a que el Puerto Rico Open fuera mejor y definitivamente trataría de obtener mejores fechas para una mejor audiencia.
Dicho eso, la Asociación de Golf de Puerto Rico está haciendo una labor excelente promoviendo el deporte y especialmente en los arreglos para el Puerto Rico Open. Todos los jugadores con los que he hablado dicen que les encanta el evento y les encanta la Isla. Siempre mencionan la gran hospitalidad y por alguna razón ¡me dan las gracias a mí! Los jugadores jóvenes que han venido aquí y han ganado el torneo son un orgullo para el deporte, como el novato Derek Lamely, quien ganó el torneo de 2010 tras haber participado en tan solo doce torneos de la PGA; Gregg Kraft, quien ganó el evento inaugural y Michael Bradley, ganador en 2009. Los recaudos del torneo ayudan a muchas entidades benéficas locales, especialmente las del área de Río Grande.
Más vale que los jóvenes anden listos este año… porque me estoy preparando para jugar en el torneo. De hecho, practiqué ayer. Construí un gimnasio en casa y me estoy poniendo en forma para este torneo. ¡Jugaré tan bien como lo hacía antes!
Ahora hablando en serio y dejando a un lado las bromas, me encanta el torneo y el campo Trump es el mejor campo de torneos en la Isla. Me encanta ir a jugar allí, en especial con mi buen amigo Jorge Díaz, uno de los dueños. Dorado también está entre mis campos favoritos. Me gusta jugar golf solo; así puedo dar cuatro golpes y apuntarme un 3. Sé de un hombre que hizo un hoyo en uno y se apuntó un 0. Me gusta hacer tiro al hoyo (putting) en los greens de El Legado más que en ningún otro lugar. Son como los del PGA Tour en los Estados Unidos continentales.
Lo que es verdaderamente importante en el golf profesional es el número de veces que ganas. Si ganas 20 torneos o más, entonces eres un verdadero profesional. Ben Hogan ganó 62 [torneos] y Sam Sneed ganó 83. El dinero no es tan importante como el trofeo, pero se ha convertido en algo demasiado importante. Ahora hay jugadores que pueden estar a medio metro de la victoria pero llegan en segundo lugar porque no se esfuerzan lo suficiente. Eso elimina el instinto competitivo. En mis tiempos nosotros no jugábamos por el dinero sino por el trofeo. El dinero ha cambiado el deporte.
Me encanta el hecho de que los golfistas jóvenes y sus familias vienen a Puerto Rico por el golf. Tenemos muchos campos excelentes y el clima es casi siempre perfecto. Todavía me emociona viajar por la Isla hasta El Yunque y las cuevas en Camuy y nunca me canso del Viejo San Juan. Me encanta ir a cenar a magníficos restaurantes como Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Pearl en el Hotel La Concha y Sam’s Chophouse en Dorado. Me gusta ir al Ponce Hilton para almorzar y explorar en la costa sur de la Isla, especialmente las playas para observar manatíes.
Estoy muy orgulloso de nuestra isla y me complace decírselo a todo el mundo, con mucho gusto haría un comercial para promocionar a Puerto Rico, de manera que más personas en el mundo entero nos conozcan”.
