Ten Top Attractions

By Pedro Marbán
In this issue I arrive at ¡Qué Pasa! to find out which places in Puerto Rico are preferred by its residents either as vacation spots or to simply escape the daily hustle and bustle without having to set foot off the island.
The upcoming Saborea Puerto Rico event, an exquisite gastronomic festival that will take center stage at El Escambrón Beach April 1-3, and the 2011 Puerto Rico Open, a golf tournament to be held at Trump International Golf Club in Río Grande March 7-13, triggered my editorial debut linked to culinary arts and sports passion.
Five Puerto Rican culinary celebrities and five local sports icons tell us about their favorite places and share the “inside scoop” with tourists visiting our island.
1) Marisoll Hernández, the renowned chef, chooses Ponce as her favorite place. “I like everything about Ponce, starting with the trip from San Juan. I always go to the Hilton, which has a beach, and then I go all over the city. [Ponce] has it all, old buildings to admire and very good gastronomy. I go to the town square and sit there to watch the people go by; I go to the Firehouse and take the Serrallés Castle tour as if it were new to me.”

2) Wilo Benet, an internationally known chef, owner of the Pikayo, Payá, and Varita restaurants, and author of “Puerto Rico True Flavors,” prefers Río Mar, in Río Grande, “Where I have a villa in which I rest and work on new ideas at the same time. Ah, and also Vieques. For its diversity and gastronomic offerings, it is the peacefulness of Río Mar and Vieques’ beaches.”

3) Norma Llop, chef and culinary tourism development offi cial at the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, selects “Our [island’s] mountain area. Some of the most spectacular municipalities include Jayuya—my family is from this town—Adjuntas, Maricao, and San Sebastián. All have an agricultural history, and they are the birthplaces of our historical cuisine. It thrills me to see the evolution and modern reconstruction of old recipes within the new criollo concept, complemented in many annual celebrations.”
4) Mario Rodríguez, account manager and sommelier at Plaza Cellars, says: “My favorite place is … Aguada. For longer vacations, [I prefer] Vieques, where I disconnect from everything.”

Diez atractivos predilectos
