In the center of the island, specifically in Corozal (a
little over an hour from the San Juan metro area), you’ll find Monte Choca
State Forest, a destination no nature-loving visitor should miss. It is on
PR808 in Corozal’s Palos Blancos sector, which adjoins the municipality of
Naranjito’s Cedro Arriba sector.
The forest covers an area of 244.73 cuerdas and, because its
climate and annual rainfall, is classified as a subtropical wet forest of great
ecological value, featuring beautiful bodies of water, numerous entenary trees, and endangered birds.
The
forest rests in the basin of Mavillas River, a tributary of Cibuco River. The
excellent quality of its water has led to a proposal to build dams at different
sections of the river for pools of water for people to consume.
At Monte Choca State Forest, you’ll find a multipurpose
building with restrooms, a small museum, and a artificial lagoon. Guided tours
are available for exploring the on-site trails. The forest is a perfect venue
for different kinds of events, nature photography, bird watching, and
scientific research.
Native trees and bushes you’ll find in the forest include
the granadillo or fourleaf buchenavia
(Buchenavia capitata), achiotillo or dove wood (Alchomea latifolia),
moca or cabbage bark tree (Andira inermis), maricao (Byrsonima spicata),
cabrilla (Casearia arborea), yagrumo hembra or trumpet tree (Cecropia
schreberiana), and camasey. There are also myriad birds, amphibians, reptiles,
mammals, and mollusks.

Bosque Estatal Monte Choca en Corozal: una aventura que no debe perderse
En el
centro de la isla, específicamente en el pueblo de Corozal (a poco más de una
hora del área metropolitana de San Juan) se encuentra un atractivo que ningún
visitante amante de la naturaleza debe pasar por alto: el Bosque Estatal Monte
Choca. Está ubicado en la carretera PR808 en el Barrio Palos Blancos de Corozal
y colinda con el Barrio Cedro Arriba del municipio de Naranjito.
El bosque
cubre un área de 244.73 cuerdas y por su clima y régimen de lluvia está
clasificado como bosque húmedo
subtropical de gran valor ecológico, con hermosos cuerpos de agua, gran
cantidad de árboles centenarios y aves en peligro de extinción. El bosque está
ubicado dentro de la cuenca hidrográfica del Río Mavillas, un tributario del Río
Cibuco. Debido a la gran calidad de sus aguas, se ha propuesto represar
secciones del río para obtener agua para consumo humano.
En el
Bosque Estatal Monte Choca hay un centro comunal con área para actividades y
baños, un pequeño museo, una laguna artificial y se ofrecen recorridos guiados
a través de las veredas. El bosque está disponible para realizar actividades,
llevar a cabo fotografía naturalista, observación de aves, paseos en bicicleta
e investigaciones científicas.
