The World’s Best 10K, one of the largest events of any kind
held in Puerto Rico, is celebrating its 17th anniversary this year. The
6.2-mile road race is one of the 20 most competitive and internationally
acclaimed distance running events in the world and has become the island’s
signature sports tourism event.
A star-studded field of international and local
runners— professionals and amateurs including local kids, their parents,
grandparents, friends, and neighbors—will run or walk across Teodoro Moscoso
Bridge in San Juan on Sunday, Feb. 23. The big race starts at exactly 5:25 p.m.
Along with its growing prestige, the World’s Best 10K has
become a community affair that attracts thousands of participants and spectators
from Puerto Rico and all over the world who come to enjoy its health, athletic,
and environmental programs and events. A
Fitness Festival is held at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan’s Hato Rey
sector on the Friday and Saturday before the race. In addition to the 10K, there
is also a Duathlon, a Wheelchair Race, and the Scotiabank Kids Mini Race over
Moscoso Bridge.
Race director Rafael Acosta is very proud of the WB10K’s
accomplishments, like achieving the Female World Record in 2003 when Paula Radcliff
clocked an official time of 30 minutes, 21 seconds. She became the fastest
woman on earth at 10 kilometers—a feat that still stands today. The WB10K
received the IAAF Gold Label Certification, a distinction it shares with four
other races in the western hemisphere: the Boston, Chicago, and New York
marathons plus the Bogota Half Marathon. “For our small nonprofit organization
in Puerto Rico, this is a huge honor,” Acosta said.
Everyone is invited to take some time off and visit Puerto
Rico during race week, and enjoy the beaches, the sun, and the food—and also experience a world-class
event. Run it or Walk it! For more information, or to register, visit
