El Yunque National Forest is one of the most visited attractions in Puerto Rico—and for good reason. In addition to its many hiking trails through unforgettable tropical landscapes, there are waterfalls for a quick dip, flowers and foliage for quality photographs, and views from lookout towers that can take your breath away.
One of the most popular exhibits at the forest’s El Portal Visitors’ Center is dedicated to the Puerto Rican parrot, one of the most endangered bird species on the face of the Earth. At one time—in the early 19th
century—more than a million of these native birds inhabited the island, but—as a result of the loss of habitat to coffee and sugarcane plantations, hurricanes, predators, and urbanization—by 1975 only 13 birds were believed to remain.
Thanks to the efforts by conservationists and special breeding programs in El Yunque and other forests in Puerto Rico, their number has slowly risen and now reaches 409 parrots living in captivity and up to 141 living in the wild. The most recent good news announced that two were born in the wild outside of the rainforest for the first time in 144 years.
You can share in the excitement by visiting El Portal, learning about the program, viewing a film on the importance of rainforests in the world, and enjoying exhibits that present the wonders of the forest. A gift ship and small coffee shop are on site.
El Portal Visitors Center (787-888-1880) is on PR191 (the road to El Yunque) at km 4.0. GPS coordinates: 18.330734, -65.766894. It is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day (except Dec. 25) and there is a charge for admission.
